We stumbled upon one of Akio Takamori's stoneware landscapes at the Portland Art Museum. He made a number of mountains, some with little castles or houses nestled into the sides, glazed in soft colors that ease the transition between two and three dimensional representation. They reference the Greek Isles of classical traditions as well as Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, which mean “pictures of the floating world. The exaggerated scale of the peaks and movement of the atmospheric clouds make these mini worlds come alive and invite imagination.
